History

The Solemn Blessing and Dedication of Holy Sepulcher School took place on May 7, 1960 at 3:00 pm with His Excellency the Most Reverend John J. Wright DD., Bishop of Pittsburgh as celebrant.

Much planning had gone into the development of the school.  Long range plans for the development of the parish facilities were begun with the appointment of Father King as first pastor of the parish.  However, Father King died on May 6, 1956, without these plans having been completed.  Father Vincent P. Brennan, his successor, further organized the parish to meet increasing needs of the rapidly growing community.  Finally a suitable plan was drawn up and submitted to the Diocesan Building Committee for approval.  Approval of the request was received on March 24, 1959, the very evening Father Brennan passed on to his eternal reward.

Reverend Joseph R. Berkmyre, the newly assigned pastor quickly placed confidence in the Building Committee and advised them to proceed with the plans.  Construction of the school began in 1959 and within the next year the school was ready to open its doors to children of the first four grades.  Plans called for an additional grade to be added each following year.

On August 22, 1960 the Bernardine Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis under the direction of Sister Bonaventa, the first Superior and Principal came to reside in the parish rectory.  At the same time a new rectory was built to house the Pastor Father Berkmyre.  The Sisters resided in the old rectory until their number grew to seven, at which time the present convent was purchased for the residence.  The old rectory was then converted into the Annex.
